Management of Violent Patient in the Emergency Situation


Abstract
Violence can be defined as threatening or destructive acts or ideations to animate or inanimate objects. Violence by psychiatric patients has become not only psychiatric concern but also public concern. Violence is the result of an interaction of
the
cahracteristics of the individual with factors in the environment. There is never one cause and never one treatment, but a balance of biological, psychological, social factors are responsible for violent behavior. Therefore, treatment of violent
patients must adhere to the biopsychosocial model. If treat violent patient in the emergency situation, doctor must keep in mind his and other people's safeties. Verbal contact with violent patients should be done in a nonprovocative and calm
manner.
Violent behavior can be classified organic mental disorders, functional psychotic disorders, or nonpsychotic nonorganic disorders. The choice of treatment of violent patient is based on the etiology of the violence. Verbal intervention,
seclusion,
physical restraint, medication can be used for control of violence. Rapid neuroleptization is effective in the emergency situation. Medication, behavior therapy and long-term outpatient psychotherapy are useful therapeutic methods of long-term
treatment
of violent patients.
